Joaquin received an Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of the
Joker (Arthur Fleck) – and the film garnered an additional Academy
Award for Best Original Score.
The sequel also screened during the Venice International Film Festival last month
in September, where it earned a 12-minute standing ovation, per Deadline.
However, audiences have since taken to X after the movie released in theaters on Friday – and
shared their opinions on the sequel, which features
musical sequences.
One fan penned, ‘Joaquin Phoenix don’t deserve this.

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Phillips
discussed whether he would be interested in making a third Joker film or a movie centered around Gaga’s
character.
‘It’s not really where this movie is headed for me. I feel like my time in the
DC Universe was these two films.’

Joe Aston got the kind of book launch every first time author dreams of – massive amounts of free publicity online,
in newspapers and on TV and radio.
And it was all thanks to Anthony Albanese’s ill-informed attack on Aston over what was written in his book, The Chairman’s
Lounge – The Inside Story of how Qantas sold us out.
Despite the resultant terrible publicity – which has led to him being called ‘upgrade Albo’
– and calls for an inquiry, Aston told Daily Mail Australia his book is ‘not a
hit job on Anthony Albanese’.
Aston insisted he’s ‘not trying to get a scalp’, but reiterated that the Prime Minister ‘had a direct line to Alan Joyce’.
The book claims Mr Albanese got 22 upgrades
from economy on Qantas flights by personally
requesting them from the airline’s then CEO Mr Joyce – which
the Prime Minister has categorically denied.
According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’, 11 of
the 22 flights Mr Albanese got upgrades for were ‘privately funded’
and included overseas trips to Rome, London, Los Angeles
and Honolulu.
But instead of addressing the claim, Mr Albanese chose to shoot the messenger and, in turn, shot himself in the foot.
He said Aston was using the accusations to sell books and said
he was hiding his employment history.
‘I don’t see declarations that he’s a former Liberal Party staffer… I don’t
see declarations he’s a former Qantas employee,’ the Prime Minister said.
But before the book even gets to the contents page there is
a photo of Aston that refers to him as the then-Qantas corporate communications senior adviser.

And the first chapter of the book reveals that he worked for then-Liberal
MP Bruce Baird, who held the southern Sydney seat of Cook before
Scott Morrison.
‘My professional history is not a secret or not disclosed,
it’s in the first line of the first page of
the book,’ Aston said on Tuesday night, just before his book launch.
Though he was grateful for the free publicity Mr Albanese’s response gave
the book, Aston was still ‘staggered’ at the untrue claims about him the
Prime Minister made.
‘He’s under enormous pressure and I know, I’ve seen this many times with public figures and leaders who struggle to see their own part
in it, the terrible circumstances that they create,’ he said.

Asked if Mr Albanese had been poorly advised in his attack, Aston, who
is a former Australian Financial Review columnist, wonders if the Prime
Minister ‘even listens to advice at this point’.
‘All he’s doing is talking around the issue and he’s blaming me and he’s blaming
other MP’s for also taking upgrades (on Qantas flights).
‘He’s avoiding the only thing that he can’t talk about, which is,
did you ask Qantas for confirmed upgrades on your private holidays when you were the Transport Minister?
The answer is “yes” and he’s desperately trying to avoid
saying it.’
Smelling blood, Opposition leader Peter Dutton said the Prime Minister should refer himself to the anti-corruption commission over the flight upgrades.
Coming on top of Mr Albanese’s tone deaf purchase of a $4.3million clifftop mansion while
so many people are struggling to pay their mortgage or rent,
the latest blow to his credibility has led to calls
for him to resign.
Aston refuses to be drawn on this, though.
‘I never expected this (part of the book) to even this part to get this
far. I really am shocked at how it’s blown up.

‘So to the extent that it has, I would say … anyone who reads
the book will learn that this book is not a hit job on Anthony Albanese.
This book is about Qantas.
‘Anthony Albanese is an example of how Qantas influences politicians on both sides of the aisle,
Labor, Liberal, National, you name it. They’ve been doing it for more than a generation.
‘They’re the best influence peddler in Australia.
I’m not here trying to get a scalp. That’s not what this book is about and it never was.’
But the conversation Daily Mail Australia had with Aston mirrors the conversations being had
across Australia and eventually winds up back on Mr Albanese.
‘Even I’ve underestimated how fed up the public is with the freebie mindset of
politicians,’ he said.

‘And unfortunately for Albanese, he’s been in politics a long time and that kind of
behaviour is quite normalised to him, is what I’ve seen.
‘I mean, he loves the free concert tickets and sitting at
the front row of the Australian Open Tennis.
‘I went to the Australian Open Tennis as a journalist almost every year for 12 years and he was the only
Prime Minister (I saw there).
‘Those tickets are worth thousands of dollars to sit in the front row of
the International Grand Slam. He’s the first Prime Minister who I’ve ever seen do
that.
‘That to me is a sign that he doesn’t quite get what it looks like to
others when he’s on the gravy train. And I think (the claims
in the book are) just another example of that.’
In Australian politics it’s regular practise for an MP’s
travel to be booked in economy, then someone in their
office phones the airline and asks if their flight can be upgraded.
The difference with the Prime Minister is that ‘he had a very direct line to
Alan Joyce,’ Aston said.
‘The other thing is there’s a difference
between an upgrade where it’s in the booking and if the seat’s empty when the flight closes, you’ll get upgraded.
‘This is different. This is a confirmed upgrade where the ticket is converted and
you are guaranteed. You’re not going to the airport crossing your fingers going “Geez, I hope there is a spare seat”.
‘You’re guaranteed. You turn up knowing you’re getting a seat and the only person at Qantas
who can issue those types of upgrades is the CEO. No other executive can do
that.
‘So it is beyond question that Alan joints authorised these upgrades (for
Anthony Albanese).’
Aston enjoyed many upgrades to the pointy end of planes during his time as a travel
journalist, and understands the attraction for politicians to get up
there.
‘These things are tempting and it’s human nature too.
Once you’ve experienced the front of the plane,
it’s very hard to go back.
‘For politicians, they run around with all these staff and they’ve got chauffeured cars
and they fly in business, but they don’t get paid like CEOs …
‘They’re not in a situation where they can afford to go flying around in the front of the plane on personal travel.
‘A normal person would say “Therefore I won’t (fly business class). But (for politicians) it’s a culture of entitlement.’
Aston is careful to point out that most people would say politicians are ‘very well paid compared to the average worker’.
But that doesn’t stop some MPs from desperately seeking a free ride, whether it’s a flight upgrade, concert tickets or the executive box at sporting events.
Late on Wednesday night, a spokeswoman Mr Albanese said ‘The Prime Minister did not ever call Alan Joyce seeking an upgrade’.
‘All travel has been appropriately declared and is a matter of public record.’

US pop star Lady Gaga has taken on a track known best to
Aussies as the opening theme to the iconic comedy series Kath & Kim.
The song, originally written by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley for the 1964 stage musical The Roar Of The Greasepaint
– The Smell Of The Crowd, is performed by Gaga for her film Joker:
Folie à Deux.
To most Australians, it is the bold and brassy version sung
by Gina Riley, who also plays Kimberly Diane ‘Kim’ Craig (née Day) in the
legendary comedy.
Before being immortalised in to the fabric of
Australian pop culture, thanks to Gina’s rendition, the song
had been covered by the likes of Shirley Bassey in 1968 and Sammy Davis Jr
in 1965.
And now, the Born This Way hitmaker has taken a
stab at the track – with the results markedly different to the brassy feel of
the Kath & Kim version.
Gaga’s take, which also features on her new album Harlequin, is a much
more stripped back that builds to a crescendo thanks to rocking guitars.
Speaking to Today Extra about the track, Kath & Kim star Peter Rowsthorn joked that he was ‘constantly’
hounded by the US pop star regarding the track.
‘She’s constantly calling me, so I know she’s a big fan,’ Pete, who play’s Kim’s on-again-off-again husband Brett
in the series, said.

version over the Kath and Kim title sequence to Instagram and viewers were quick to issue
their shock at the surprising cover version.

The thread began with a question from user u/Fantastic-Ant-4429, who asked: ‘What is a sexual
fantasy you do not recommend fulfilling?’
Having sex in the desert, a library and on a plane were some of the most upvoted responses, Huffpost reported.
Reddit user u/ElPresidente714 admitted to trying to have sex in the desert at night when coming
back from Vegas. But in reality, they were met with ‘creepy crawly desert things
don’t sleep at night’.
Another, u/DonSmitty said a ‘buddy in high school’ covered his girlfriend (including
her genitals) in chocolate syrup. But it didn’t end well — she got infected with a ‘crazy’ yeast
infection.
Doing it in a storage unit was another unusual fantasy which ended badly.
User u/isthisfark wrote: ‘There’s a closing time and

Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips, DC and Warner- with claims that Michael DeLuca,

and Abdy rather than Gunn and Safran – who took control of DC two months before production began on Joker 2

Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening for the studio but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he told a reporter: ‘With all due respect to them, this is kind of a Warner Bros.

A Warner spokesman told the publication the studio ‘supported
the decision to film in Los Angeles’.

you’re going to fail.
Insiders also claim studio bosses did not want to
premiere the film at the Venice Film Festival, but Phillips pushed back – with a Warner spokesman saying the
studio ‘fully supported the decision to bring the film to Venice.
Along with Gaga and Phoenix, other stars that had appeared in the sequel
include Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Zazie Beatz and Steve Coogan.

ended up being slammed by critics and failed to ignite at the box office

However, Joker: Folie À Deux has been given a D rating on CinemaScore — the lowest score for a
comic book movie.
Madame Web — which notably also flopped in theaters earlier this
year and also received terrible reviews — holds a higher score with a C+.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience score of 31% and
a critic score of 32%.
The sequel has been roundly criticized for being a
musical and ‘ignoring’ the DC fanbase – with an agent familiar with director Todd
Phillips’ process telling Variety he ‘wanted nothing to do with DC’ during the making of the film, with DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran notably absent from the film’s LA premiere afterparty last month.
A source said: ‘If the first movie was about some down-on-his-luck, mentally ill guy in a downtrodden city,
it makes maybe $150 [million] worldwide. Not a billion. People showed up because that guy was
Joker.’
In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of the film does not include a DC Studios logo.
A Warner spokesman added that a DC logo appears at the end of the
Joker sequel, while Phillips declined to comment to the publication.
Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips,
DC and Warner- with claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros.
Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to say
no to Phillips due to his huge past successes.
It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and
Abdy rather than Gunn and Safran – who took control of DC two months
before production began on Joker 2 in December 2022.
Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening for the studio but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he told a reporter: ‘With all due respect to them, this is kind of a Warner
Bros. movie.’
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips shortly after WarnerMedia and Discovery merged in April 2022 and
was ‘open to filming in Los Angeles if the director would
make the sequel at a lower price point.’
The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost
around 20 per cent less.
A source directly involved with the film recently shared: ‘The
one thing about genre stuff: If you don’t listen and pay attention to
what the fan expectations are, you’re going to fail’;

However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the budget remaining static.
A Warner spokesman told the publication the studio ‘supported
the decision to film in Los Angeles’.

pay attention to what the fan expectations are, you’re going to fail.
Insiders also claim studio bosses did not want to premiere the film
at the Venice Film Festival, but Phillips pushed
back – with a Warner spokesman saying the studio ‘fully
supported the decision to bring the film to Venice.
Along with Gaga and Phoenix, other stars that had appeared in the sequel include Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Zazie Beatz
and Steve Coogan.

Just three weeks ago, tracking services pegged the movie for a $70 million debut, which would still have been down a fair amount from Joker’s record-breaking $96.2 million launch in October 2019.

Reviews were mixed out of the Venice Film Festival, where it premiered in competition like the first movie and even got a 12-minute standing ovation.
But the homecoming glow was short-lived, and the fragile foundation would crumble in the coming weeks with its Rotten Tomatoes score dropping from 63 percent at Venice to 33 percent by its first weekend in theaters. Perhaps even more surprising were the audience reviews: Ticket
buyers polled on opening night gave the film a deadly
D CinemaScore. Exit polls from PostTrak weren’t any better.
It got a meager half star out of five possible.
‘That´s a double whammy that´s very difficult to recover from,’ said
Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for Comscore.
‘The biggest issue of all is the reported budget. A $40
or $50 million opening for a less expensive movie would be a solid
debut.’
Joker: Folie à Deux cost at least twice as much as the first film to produce,
though reported figures vary at exactly how pricey it
was to make. Phillips told Variety that it was less than the reported $200 million; Others have it pegged at $190
million. Warner Bros. released the film in 4,102 locations in North America.
About 12.5 percent of its domestic total came from 415 IMAX screens.
Internationally, it’s earned $81.1 million from 25,788 screens, bringing its total global earnings estimate to $121.1 million. In the next two weeks, Joker
2 will also open in Japan and China.
Second place went to Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s The Wild Robot,
which added $18.7 million in its second weekend, bringing
its domestic total to nearly $64 million. Globally, it’s made over $100 million. Warner Bros.’ Beetlejuice Beetlejuice took third place in weekend five, Paramount’s Transformers One landed in fourth and Universal and Blumhouse’s Speak No Evil rounded out the top five.
The other big new release of the weekend, Lionsgate’s White Bird, flopped with just
$1.5 million from just over 1,000 locations, despite an A+ CinemaScore.
Overall, the weekend is up from the same frame last year, but
Joker’s start is an unwelcome twist for theater owners hoping to
narrow the box office deficit.
The sequel has already been the subject of many think pieces,
some who posit that it was deliberately alienating fans of the first movie
Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix have said they aspired to make something as ‘audacious’ as the first
film. The sequel added Lady Gaga into the fold , as a Joker superfan,
and delved further into the mind of Arthur Fleck,
imprisoned at Arkham and awaiting trial for the murders he committed in the first.
It´s also a musical, with elaborately imagined song and
dance numbers to old standards. Gaga even released a companion album called ”Harlequin,’ alongside the film.
The sequel has already been the subject of many think pieces, some who posit that it was deliberately alienating fans of
the first movie. In cruder terms, it´s been called a ‘middle finger.’ But
fans often ignore the advice of critics, especially when it comes to opening their
wallets to see revered comic book characters on the big screen.
‘They took a swing for the fences,’ Dergarabedian said.
‘But except for a couple of outliers, audiences in 2024 seem to want to know
what they´re getting when they´re going to the theater. They want the tried and true, the familiar.’
Deadline editor Anthony D´Alessandro thinks the problem started with
the idea to make the Joker sequel a musical. ‘No fan of
the original movie wanted to see a musical sequel,’ he
wrote on Saturday.
The first film was also divisive and the subject of much discourse, then about
whether it might send the wrong message to the wrong type
of person. And yet people still flocked to see what the fuss was about.
Joker went on to pick up 11 Oscar nominations, including best picture and best director, and three wins.
It also made over $1 billion and was the highest-grossing R-rated film of
all time, until this summer when Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine took the crown.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to
Comscore. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

March 24 (Reuters) – Marlboro maker Philip Morris International Inc is working on options to exit the Russian market, citing a complex and rapidly changing regulatory
and operating environment in the country following
its invasion of Ukraine.

LONDON, Sept 28 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International (PMI) on Thursday signalled a slower than anticipated U.S.
roll out of its IQOS heated tobacco device, a choice analysts
said was positive for its competitors in the short term.
The New York-listed Marlboro maker also said it aims for
more than two thirds of its net revenues to come from “smoke-free” products by 2030, up from
50% in 2025, as it tries to transform its image
from a cigarette purveyor to a driver of the
shift to healthier alternatives.
Investors have been closely watching IQOS’ entry into
the U.S., the world’s largest market for nicotine products, and had
been expecting it from May 2024 next year. Reuters reported on Wednesday that PMI is hiring lobbyists across a host of key U.S.
states ahead of the launch.
Chief Executive Jacek Olczak said IQOS would launch in four cities in two unnamed U.S.
states from 2024, but a national launch would
only come after PMI receives approval to sell the latest version, known as IQOS ILUMA.
The company was planning to apply for approval in October and expected it from 2025, he continued.
“We need to warm up the tyres,” he said of the initial launch, which would help PMI
fine tune its approach.
A national roll-out of ILUMA would follow but in phases, he continued, adding
launching in 10 states in the first year would make sense.
Meaningful traction for PMI’s heated tobacco products in the
U.S. “now looks delayed until ILUMA,” Owen Bennett, equity analyst at
Jefferies, said in a note, adding this was a positive for PMI’s rivals.
Olczak also signalled that PMI’s push into non-nicotine products was no longer a priority.
It recently scrapped an ambition for $1 billion in net revenues to
come from sales of such products by 2025.
Instead, PMI will focus its resources on IQOS and nicotine pouch brand ZYN, Olczak said, adding it had
been too optimistic around acceptance of big tobacco companies
operating outside of nicotine.
PMI also announced updated medium-term targets including
for revenue and earnings per share, and ambitious volume targets for IQOS
and ZYN.
ZYN and other oral nicotine products in the U.S.
would help drive an expected $2 billion in revenues there in 2024,
even before IQOS ILUMA, executives said.

July 23 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International pushed the test-launch of its heated tobacco device, IQOS, in the
U.S. to the fourth quarter on Tuesday and lowered its annual
forecast for the heated tobacco business.
The pilot was earlier scheduled to run in Austin, Texas,
in the second quarter, for which the company reported results on the day.
The company declined to comment on why the
launch had been delayed.
Philip Morris has invested billions to promote and expand its portfolio of alternatives to traditional combustible cigarettes amid stricter regulations
and falling smoking rates in some markets.
The launch of its flagship heated tobacco device in the United States
is also facing resistance from health campaigners, who have written to regulators in the country accusing
the company of misrepresenting past regulatory decisions, Reuters reported last week.
The company also awaits market authorization from the U.S.
Food and Drug Administration for its IQOS ILUMA device,
which it expects by the second half of 2025.
A ban on flavored heated tobacco in the European Union has
already hit shipments this year, with Philip Morris saying the impact from the ban was “slightly greater” than previously assumed.
This led the company to temper its expectations for volume growth in the heated tobacco category to around 13% for the full year, down from between 14% and 16% expected earlier.
However, Philip Morris topped quarterly expectations and raised its annual sales and profit
forecasts, betting on demand for its Zyn nicotine pouches, as

PARIS (AP) – Not even a tense tête-à-tête in the gold medal game could spoil the vibe at Paris´
biggest beach party.
Canada´s Brandie Wilkerson and Brazil´s Ana Patrícia got into
a finger-pointing shouting match across the net
in the tiebreaking third set of the beach volleyball final of the Paris Olympics on Friday night.
The referee tried to keep the peace, but it was the Eiffel Tower Stadium DJ who cooled tempers on the sand
by playing John Lennon´s “Imagine” over the PA system.
The players laughed and clapped. The crowd applauded and sang along.
Wilkerson was shown a yellow card.
The top-ranked Brazilians left with the gold medal.
“We`re competitors and we are fighting for the same thing: There´s only one gold medal,” Wilkerson said during a post-match news conference in which the two laughed and jokingly put up their fists
as if they were going to brawl it out.

“Immediately after the game, it´s all love and respect,” she said.
“We bring out the best in each other, and I´m honored to play against this team.”
Ana Patrícia and Duda rallied from an 11-5
deficit to take the first-to-21, win-by-two first
set 26-24, and Canada won the second 21-12. Brazil opened up a 12-7 lead in the first-to-15 tiebreaker when, after a joust at the net,
Wilkerson and Ana Patrícia began pointing fingers at each other.
The second referee, the one at sand level, moved out to separate the
two players, but Wilkerson continued to argue and picked
up a yellow card. As the Brazilians got into position to serve for the
next point, the DJ began playing “Imagine,” the late Beatle’s
song calling for unity and peace.
The message resonated with the players.
“What a beautiful opportunity we have to play the finals under the Eiffel Tower against the best in the world,” Wilkerson said.
“Like, that, in of itself, is a win.”
Wilkerson told reporters afterward that it was all a misunderstanding: She was responding to her
family, cheering in the crowd behind the Brazilians, and Ana Patrícia thought
Wilkerson was taunting her.
“We´re pretty amped up, partners are coming in, refs are coming in. So it was a bit of a mess,” Wilkerson said.
“But after the game, and even right when they came to shake our hands, still on the court, there was an immediate hug and just kind of like, `Hey, it´s all good.´”
When play resumed, it took Brazil only five more points to finish off Wilkerson and Melissa Humana-Paredes,
kicking off a party the sport’s spiritual home hadn’t seen since hosting the
2016 Rio de Janeiro Games at Copacabana. In Tokyo, the country was shut
out at the Summer Games for the first time since beach volleyball was added
to the program in 1996.
Three years later, Brazil not only returned to the podium but climbed to its top step.
With the Eiffel Tower’s strobes sparking in the background and
yellow- and green-wearing fans singing and waving Brazilian flags, the country was awarded its first women’s gold since Atlanta.
(The United States, which had won four of the last five, was shut out in both the men’s and women’s tournaments in Paris.)
After the medal ceremony, the Canadians and Brazilians – along with
the bronze-winning Swiss – posed for selfies together.
Wilkerson and Ana Patrícia spoke to each other
and hugged; there may have even been an air kiss.
“It was a game thing,” Ana Patrícia said. “Everybody wants to win. But it happens. It´s everybody trying to win, but now everything is OK.”
Wilkerson and Humana-Paredes will return to Canada with the country’s
first beach volleyball medal since the men won bronze at the 1996
Atlanta Games. That team was coached by Humana-Paredes’ father.
Switzerland beat Australia in straight sets in the third-place game earlier Friday
night to earn the bronze medal.
Nina Brunner and Tanja Huerberli beat Tokyo silver medalists Taliqua Clancy
and Mariafe Artacho del Solar 21-17, 21-15 in 39 minutes.
It was the second Summer Games in a row that a Swiss team took the bronze medal, coming three years
after Joana Heidrich and Anouk Vergé-Dépré placed third in Tokyo.
On the men’s side, Sweden was set to face Germany for gold on Saturday night, with Norway
and Qatar playing for the bronze.

July 23 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International pushed the test-launch of its heated tobacco
device, IQOS, in the U.S. to the fourth quarter on Tuesday and
lowered its annual forecast for the heated tobacco business.
The pilot was earlier scheduled to run in Austin, Texas, in the second quarter, for which the company reported results on the day.
The company declined to comment on why the launch had been delayed.
Philip Morris has invested billions to promote and expand its portfolio of alternatives
to traditional combustible cigarettes amid stricter regulations
and falling smoking rates in some markets.
The launch of its flagship heated tobacco device in the
United States is also facing resistance from health campaigners, who have
written to regulators in the country accusing the company of misrepresenting past regulatory decisions, Reuters reported
last week.
The company also awaits market authorization from the U.S.
Food and Drug Administration for its IQOS ILUMA device,
which it expects by the second half of 2025.
A ban on flavored heated tobacco in the European Union has already hit shipments this year, with Philip Morris
saying the impact from the ban was “slightly greater” than previously assumed.
This led the company to temper its expectations for
volume growth in the heated tobacco category to around 13% for the full year, down from between 14% and 16% expected earlier.
However, Philip Morris topped quarterly expectations and raised
its annual sales and profit forecasts, betting on demand for its Zyn nicotine pouches, as well as

BANGKOK, Nov 4 (Reuters) – The independence of central banks is being challenged
and they have come under more pressure lately than at any time in the past decade,
the Bank of Thailand (BOT) chief said, according to
a speech transcript released on Monday.
“Central bank independence in many countries, including Thailand, is being challenged despite having done a reasonable job over past decades,” Governor Sethaput Suthiwartnarueput said in remarks made at the BIS annual
conference in Switzerland, an undated transcript of which the BOT released on Monday.
“If we allow central bank independence to be eroded, we will not be able to deliver on our core mandates,” the governor said.
The conference took place on June 28, according to the BIS website, which on Oct.
30 published a paper with transcripts of remarks by
several central bank governors, including Sethaput, at the event.
The BOT later on Monday removed the transcript from its site.
It did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The comments were delivered at a time when the BOT had clashed with Thailand’s government over monetary policy, with the central bank until last month coming under near-daily pressure to cut
interest rates to help spur growth.
The BOT unexpectedly cut its benchmark rate to 2.25% in October, but has since stressed that it was not embarking on an easing cycle and said the move was a “recalibration” and not a caving to political pressure.
Former BOT governors last week expressed their concern that a candidate for the role of central bank board chairman had
“close political ties”, widely seen as referring to the government’s
nominee, a critic of the current governor.
The Thai government has maintained it respects the BOT’s independence, but wants it to do more
to help it revive the economy, growth of which has been tepid.
The BOT on Monday said the decision on a candidate had been delayed until next week, the second time it
has been postponed. The finance minister said the role had limited authority and the delay would not impact the central bank’s work.
In the remarks at the conference in Switzerland, Sethaput also said unconventional policies such as
expanding balance sheets and pervasive crisis measures had expanded central banks’ footprints in private
markets and raised expectations on what a central bank can achieve.
“It results in not just moving the goalpost but also adding more goalposts. As expectations increase, it becomes harder to ring-fence our reputation, credibility and the case for central bank independence,”
